Scale, awe, and social power

Size is psychologically active. It can produce fear, awe, humility, collective identity, or suspicion depending on whether the large thing feels shared, uncontrollable, or able to spread through everything around it.

From strength to presence

The video starts with a broad sense of size. Large animals have fewer predators, a monumental building demands attention, and a leader can possess a social presence much larger than their body. Scale becomes influential when it changes what observers believe is possible or what they feel able to resist.

Megalophobia makes that influence unusually visible. The fear is often directed toward ships, dams, towers, statues, and other structures rather than only toward large predators. The narrator speculates that the response may concern insignificance and helplessness: the object could crush a person without noticing, and its scale reorganizes the surrounding environment.

Awe and the sublime

Awe appears when something vast exceeds the current mental model. It can reduce attention to the self and make participation in a larger group feel more natural. This helps explain the social force of pyramids, monuments, religious spaces, mountains, and views of space.

The video links awe to physiological calming, oxytocin, and reduced self-focus. These claims are presented as a compact neuroscience explanation rather than a review of individual studies. The proposed social effect is clearer than the exact mechanism: when attention moves away from the individual, participation in a larger group becomes easier to imagine.

Ancient pyramids become the example. Whatever their original political function, their immense scale can turn coordinated labor into a durable symbol of collective capacity. The monument says that a civilization can organize itself across lifetimes.

The sublime combines attraction with dread. A cliff, storm, colossal structure, or enormous machine can be beautiful while making one’s lack of control physically obvious. The response is contemplative rather than identical to ordinary fight-or-flight fear.

The Moai of Easter Island illustrate the ambiguity. They are recognizably human and therefore familiar, but their size, stylization, unknown purpose, and unexpected location make them alien. The observer is drawn toward the object while remaining uncertain about the power that produced it.

The video cites imaging studies in which sublime experiences do not show the ordinary amygdala and insula pattern of immediate threat. Its interpretation is that the dread belongs to contemplation rather than preparation to flee. The object need not be attacking. Its potential and one’s lack of control are enough.

Size as power

The Titanic used size as evidence of luxury, engineering, and prestige. The same scale increased the symbolic and material force of its destruction. The ship shows why power can inspire without becoming harmless. A large thing commands respect partly because its failure would propagate farther.

Political disagreement produces a revealing symmetry. The right fears megagovernment; the left fears megacorporations. Both respond to entities too large to hold accountable and capable of setting the conditions under which smaller actors operate.

Several theories describe how this scale reproduces itself:

  • A network becomes more valuable as more people join it.
  • Pareto-like distributions concentrate a large portion of results among a small portion of causes.
  • The Matthew effect describes how an initial advantage creates the conditions for further advantage.

These are not identical laws, but each describes cumulative advantage. Once an organization, platform, fortune, or reputation becomes large, its size changes later opportunity. Smaller competitors do not merely start behind; they play on a field partly shaped by the leader.

The difference between admired monuments and distrusted institutions may lie in ownership. The pyramids can be remembered as evidence of what a civilization achieved together. A giant corporation or distant state represents concentrated power acting on people who cannot meaningfully answer it.

Quantity and pervasiveness

Physical dimensions are only one form of scale. Thousands of identical objects can produce the same pressure as one colossal structure. Repetition removes landmarks and individuality until the environment feels inescapable.

The game Antichamber demonstrates this through looping rooms, repetitive geometry, and spaces that return into themselves. The player is overwhelmed by a world that cannot be mapped through ordinary expectations.

A locust makes the point more materially. One insect is minor; a swarm darkens the sky, penetrates everything, and strips a landscape. Quantity produces a new entity with capacities absent from its members. The fear comes from influence without an effective response.

The common threat is influence without an effective response. A structure can crush, a corporation can set the field, a swarm can enter everything, and an idea can recruit the people who believe they possess it.

Ideas without bodies

The most pervasive form of scale is an idea. It needs no stable material body, can survive its author, and can reappear in people who never met one another. The Joker is used as the pop-cultural example: some versions imply that the figure cannot be defeated because “the Joker” is a role or idea rather than one biological person.

The video paraphrases Jung’s observation that people do not simply have ideas; ideas can have people. Culture, experience, genetics, and earlier concepts make it difficult to locate where a belief begins. A sufficiently large idea becomes part of the environment through which new thought occurs. Challenges to it then feel like attacks on the self.

An idea crosses into action through the people and institutions it inhabits. Its scale says nothing about its moral direction. The same persistence can support collective care, political domination, scientific inquiry, or violence.

The small self

Scale also puts ordinary worries back into proportion. The “small self” associated with awe is closer to humility than worthlessness. When a vast object represents a real collective achievement, reduced self-focus can become social glue.

The manga Blame! supplies an aesthetic example. Sparse dialogue and immense architectural drawings make the protagonist resemble a camera moving through the actual subject: the setting. The person is not erased but displaced from the center. Scale changes narrative hierarchy.

That mechanism cuts both ways. Large shared threats can unite people, and large symbols can be built to manufacture obedience. The design question is therefore not whether awe works, but what the large thing asks people to join.

Hurricanes, attacks, and other common dangers often unite groups that otherwise remain divided. This is the least comfortable form of social glue because it makes solidarity dependent on an enemy. A monument or view of space can produce a similar small-self response without requiring destruction, but the symbol can still be selected and controlled by institutions.
