Overstimulation is Ruining Your Life

Aperture opens in 1665, with Isaac Newton looking out of a window at an apple tree in Lincolnshire. The familiar story says that an apple falls, Newton follows its path, and the event helps him formulate the laws of gravity. The video treats the scene as an image of thought arriving during an unplanned pause. Newton is not running an experiment or feeding himself more information. He is bored, and his attention has room to wander.
The story leads to a present in which a quiet window, a backyard, or a few minutes under the sky can feel strangely difficult to tolerate. Boredom sends many people towards a phone before their thoughts have had time to develop. The video asks what disappears when every empty interval receives a stream of stimulation.
The discomfort of being alone with a thought
Aperture turns to a study by social psychologist Timothy Wilson at the University of Virginia. The researchers placed hundreds of student volunteers in small rooms with blank walls and no personal belongings. Each participant had to spend between six and fifteen minutes with their thoughts, then rate the experience. About half disliked the period, describing it as boring.
The researchers then left the participants alone for another fifteen minutes and added a button that delivered an electric shock. The choice was voluntary. Around 67 percent of the men and 25 percent of the women pressed it at least once rather than sit with nothing else to do. The video uses the result to suggest that physical pain can feel easier to manage than unstructured thought for some people.
The phone supplies a socially acceptable version of that button. When an empty moment appears, people move between applications whilst recommendation systems select material that keeps boredom away. Those systems need information about a person’s habits, preferences, and identity to make their selections. Aperture connects this attention economy to the sale of personal data, data-broker breaches, and the personalised scam emails that can follow a leak. The account of a friend receiving a Google warning and then scam messages comes from the presenter, so it remains an anecdote rather than evidence of the general pattern.
Newton’s quarantine and the default mode
The historical part of the video returns to Newton’s life during the plague outbreak of 1665. More than 17,000 people died in London by July, and Newton left the city for the countryside. Aperture says that the two years he spent in isolation produced work on calculus, motion, gravity, and optics, including the proposal that white light combines the colours of the spectrum. The famous apple story belongs to this period, whilst the video later qualifies the idea that a single falling apple created Newton’s achievements. His discoveries grew from years of sustained work, with solitude helping particular connections take shape. The later account names the three laws of motion as his most famous result from this period.
Psychologist Sandy Mann gives the video a mechanism for those connections. When a person daydreams during a mundane task such as washing dishes or folding laundry, the body can work on autopilot whilst the mind moves between ideas. The video calls this the default mode. It describes a state in which the mind can connect problems, form personal narratives, and set goals while conscious attention appears to be elsewhere. Programmers who find a solution in bed and people whose best ideas arrive in the shower become ordinary examples of the same process.
The problem is that modern entertainment has made even a few seconds of stillness feel underwhelming. Aperture reports that Americans reach for their phones 344 times a day, roughly once every four minutes, and spend an average of two hours and 54 minutes on them. Some people reach ten hours. The figures appear in the video without a study or method, so they describe the speaker’s evidence rather than a verified measurement here.
The video uses a definition of boredom attributed to German psychologist Theodor Lipps in 1903: displeasure that comes from wanting intense mental activity whilst lacking the excitement that could provide it. A feed offers an immediate response to that discomfort. Each new item brings novelty and a small reward, then the reward fades and the resulting boredom asks for another item. The cycle keeps the mind occupied whilst giving it little time to follow a question into the future.
That lost time affects more than concentration. When researchers give people tasks that require little mental effort, participants often think about future plans. Constant stimulation leaves less room for that kind of planning, according to the video’s account. The phone can therefore fill a pause before a person has formed an intention, and the filled pause removes the conditions in which an intention might have appeared.
Mind-wandering and creative work
Aperture then cites a 2017 study from the Georgia Institute of Technology. More than 100 participants focused on a fixed point whilst lying in an MRI scanner. The researchers compared activity during this awake resting state with questionnaires about how often the participants’ minds wandered. In the video’s telling, frequent daydreamers showed stronger intellectual and creative ability alongside more efficient brain systems. The source gives no paper title, author list, or method beyond this account.
Artists describe a similar need for unfilled time. Questlove writes in Creative Quest about resisting the distractions that surround contemporary work. Boredom seems hostile to creativity while it is happening, yet the video presents it as a period in which mental space becomes available for a new idea. Mason Currey reaches a related conclusion in Daily Rituals, his study of the routines of artists, writers, and other creative workers. Mind-wandering and diffused focus recur across those routines because creative production needs time in which the mind can make connections without a fixed task directing every step.
J.K. Rowling supplies a more specific story. Aperture says that she formed the ideas for the Harry Potter books during a four-hour train journey from Manchester to London. An iPad and a favourite Netflix series might have filled that journey with ready-made stimulation, leaving less room for the imagined world to develop. The counterfactual belongs to the video’s rhetoric, while the train journey remains a claim attributed to Rowling.
Einstein supplies the final historical example. His work on curved space-time and the fourth dimension depended on thought experiments and a vivid imagination. Aperture links that imagination to the year Einstein spent away from high school in the 1890s, when he could wander and think without the usual external demands. It also recalls his regular walks and a 1932 letter in which he described a sea voyage as a chance for calm and reflection. The video presents these details as evidence that sustained thought requires intervals in which attention can loosen.
The conclusion moves towards children and digital literacy. Psychologists encourage parents to leave children with enough unoccupied time to discover interests and make things for themselves. Learning to use technology well therefore includes learning to regulate exposure to it. Aperture returns to the familiar line that a free product makes the user the product, then describes attention as a resource contested by applications that can occupy every spare minute.
The final image returns to Newton’s window. Reaching for the phone during boredom is compared with pressing the shock button, while looking outside leaves a person with the chance to follow an idea that has not yet arrived. The video does not promise that every pause will produce a theory of gravity. It asks for enough quiet that the mind can sometimes surprise itself.

Rowling, Mason Currey, and Einstein appear as the video’s claims. I have not independently checked their original sources, and the captions do not identify the papers behind the numerical claims.
The description links to an accompanying story on What If, yet that page returned 404 during acquisition. The note therefore treats the linked story as unavailable source material. It omits the video’s Incogni sponsorship and other promotional material because those passages do not carry the argument about boredom, attention, or creative work.
