Digital Instruments Course Framework
The seminar Digital Instruments and the Shaping of 21st-Century Music treats musical practice as work shaped by tools, interfaces, automation, platforms and AI. Across the semester, its concepts form a framework for analyzing generative functional music.
Seminar frame
Digital tools, interfaces and platforms set conditions for music. At the micro level, the seminar asks how a tool or interface shapes action, workflow, skill and sound. The same analysis expands at the macro level to infrastructures that shape genre, labor, circulation, value and listening (Session 1, pp. 16, 20–24, 36; course assessment brief, pp. 1–3).
The presentation must make a clear argument about the mediation of contemporary musical practice within 15–20 minutes, using seminar theory to analyze a specific topic, tool, platform or aesthetic phenomenon (course assessment brief, pp. 2–4).

Foundations
- Session 1: post-instrumental and relational musicianship; affordances; medium theory; digital materialism; sound provenance; platforms as preconditioning compositional environments (pp. 7, 20–24, 28, 30, 36).
- Session 2: media mediation constitutes musical objects and valued skills; notation, recording and tape relocate musicianship; tools structure musical thought and possibility (pp. 3–14, 21–28, 34–58).
- Session 3: programmed time and encoded musicianship, sequencer logic, interface fluency and distributed agency, followed by an affordance taxonomy for composition, behavior, embodiment, listening, aesthetics and time (pp. 5–6, 12–14, 23–26, 32–35, 42–46, 56–63).
- Session 4: sound as sign; presets as cultural infrastructure; curatorial and navigational affordances; MIDI, automation, sampling, provenance and distributed authorship (pp. 2–8, 10–30, 42–67).
Interfaces and labor
- Session 5: mediation and modal technicity; interface literacy; hybrid and polyfunctional musicianship; automation, virtualized studios, networked learning and platform labor (pp. 22–31, 44–53, 61–67).
- Session 6: the DAW as interface-instrument; automation as “gesture without gesture”; presets and tags; VSTs as sonic grammar engines; interface-led genre formation; coding and generative logic (pp. 3–25, 40–44, 66–67).
- Session 7: expression as an interface event; tool-oriented performance; interface-specific skill; configuration and processing as artistic identity (pp. 4–5, 47–56).
- Session 8: virtual instrumentality; interface fluency; curatorial composition; latent performance; dispersed labor and opaque authorship (pp. 5–12, 28, 35–36, 60–62).
Platforms and AI
- Session 9: digital habitus; automation of musical form; ready-made sound environments; platform ecologies; metadata, search and modular material (pp. 17, 21–26, 35, 50–55).
- Sessions 10 and 11: platforms as active musical infrastructures connect recombinatory musicianship and intermittent authorship to platform labor, affective indexing, functional listening, algorithmic atmosphere and feedback loops (pp. 3–4, 9, 21, 39–55, 68–93).
- Session 12: agency redistributed through delegation, direction, and selection, with the tool as actant and emergence produced through constrained systems (pp. 5–8, 65–66, 78–79).
- Session 13: affordances and dispositif lead into post-authorship, AI-generated mood playlists and generative streaming, where musicians design conditions for emergence as mediators and semiotic laborers (pp. 5–17, 31–32, 52–64).
Most useful course chain for generative functional music
Generative functional music connects mediation to affordances, interface musicianship, automation of form, functional listening, distributed authorship, delegation and emergence. This chain keeps the analysis focused on what musicians, listeners, software and platforms each do.
[!note] Application inference A generative functional-music app can be analyzed as a case where a platform uses the same logic to classify and circulate finished works, then to produce musical form during playback. The course concepts support this inference, although the lecturer does not make the claim about a specific app.
