Frank Lloyd Wright’s Design Process

Roberts Architecture explains Frank Lloyd Wright’s design process through Louis Henry Sullivan’s influence. The route begins with Sullivan’s geometric ornament, moves from two-dimensional subdivision into three-dimensional space, and ends with Unity Temple as a building in which those operations become spatial.
Sullivan, the Lieber Meister
The video starts with Wright’s mentor, Louis Henry Sullivan, who worked for Frank Furness before moving to Chicago and joining the Chicago School of Architecture. Wright called him Lieber Meister, or beloved master, to mark his role as an artistic teacher in architecture and design.
Sullivan’s influence reaches beyond individual principles. The video presents him as an architect associated with the early skyscraper and modernism, and attributes the phrase “form follows function” to him. Sullivan’s version of the idea rests on an organic conception of nature, which the video sets against the German functionalism of the period. Wright inherits a design method that organises living form through geometry, with an organic logic that differs from the neutral technical grid of German functionalism.
The source also points to Sullivan’s use of the subdivision of a triangle, sometimes called formal subdivision or dynamic symmetry. Its claim about Wright is direct: he copied Sullivan’s geometric process almost exactly, then changed its scale and spatial reach.
From geometric subdivision to architectural space
Wright’s move consists in carrying formal subdivision from the two-dimensional ground plane into three dimensions. The geometric operation becomes a way to make rooms and volumes. The video says that formal design and Renaissance architecture already used related methods, whilst Wright’s version follows Sullivan’s particular art style.
The Merchant National Bank in Grinnell, Iowa, from 1914 supplies the first visual example. The video then names the operations it sees in Wright’s work:
- geometry as the starting point
- figure and ground
- addition
- penetration
- nesting
- a grid
- extension
These terms describe relations between forms. Addition places one form beside another. Extension carries a form along an axis. Penetration lets one form enter another, whilst nesting puts a smaller space inside a larger one. The source repeats the last three operations because they let the viewer read Wright’s buildings as connected spaces, with rooms enclosed by walls still participating in a larger spatial system.
Sullivan’s book, A System of Architectural Ornament, gives the method a larger philosophy. In the passage quoted by the video, simple forms that people once treated as mysterious or magical become instruments for controlling nature and human destiny. The passage ends with a faith in human beings who can master the organic and inorganic through enlarged vision and will. The video uses this language to connect geometric order with human agency. Geometry supplies the structure, whilst the designer gives it direction.
Pinwheels and plastic geometry
The video demonstrates one technique associated with Wright through a pinwheel. A geometric form rotates around a centre, producing a radial arrangement. Once the pinwheel exists, its parts can be moved and adjusted by rotating forms around that centre. The method creates a family of related forms from one initial figure.
The demonstration borrows Sullivan’s language of radial energy. The rigid forms become containers for energy that extends along lines or axes from the centre and also travels from the periphery towards it. The source calls this “plastic geometry”. The phrase describes a geometry that keeps the discipline of a figure whilst allowing its parts to move, extend, and alter one another.
This is where the video shifts from a diagram of form to an account of space. Wright can pull space out of a geometric figure and let one space enter, or nest inside, another. A room therefore becomes part of a larger spatial system. The system remains geometrical whilst its experience depends on movement between its parts.
Nature, geometry, and Unity Temple
The video returns to Sullivan’s combination of natural forms and developed geometry. Wright’s work carries that inheritance through the relation between organic and geometric form, as well as through the use of nested and penetrating spaces. The source attributes this whole set of concerns to Sullivan’s A System of Architectural Ornament. Its description dates the book to 1924, whilst the narration later calls it a 1929 book.
Two Wright examples make the process visible. A diagram of Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, from 1953 shows the geometric method at a later point in his career. A geometric derivation diagram for the Willits House in Highland Park, Illinois, from 1902 shows the method at an earlier point. The video uses these images to suggest continuity across Wright’s work. It leaves the making of the drawings and the consistency of the sequence across every project unexplained.
Unity Temple becomes the final case. Roberts Architecture describes it as Wright’s strongest demonstration of nesting, extension, and penetration. The building uses figure and ground, addition, penetration, nesting, a grid, and extension to make a multi-layered space. Its rooms and architectural forms appear to enter one another, so the building reads as a continuous field of connected volumes.
Wright’s process therefore begins with a geometric form, subdivides and repeats it, rotates or extends its parts, and uses those relations to create architectural space. The geometry stays visible in the building whilst the building gives the geometry movement.
Limits
This is a short visual explanation built from diagrams, photographs, and a reading of Sullivan. It presents a clear lineage from Sullivan to Wright, though it gives no primary-drawing references, edition details, or page numbers for Sullivan’s book. The claim that Wright copied Sullivan’s process “almost exactly”, the attribution of “form follows function” to Sullivan, and the classification of Sullivan as the first architect to use the phrase remain claims made by the video.
The source also compresses the difference between a geometric diagram and a finished building. The diagrams support the presence of subdivision, radial organisation, and spatial nesting in the examples shown. They leave Wright’s complete working method, along with the effects of clients, materials, site, structure, and construction, outside the frame. The evidence supports a persuasive account of formal continuity, with historical and technical claims that need fuller sources for independent verification.
