The revolt against technology

The useful frame here is that technology changes the environment we live in, then quietly changes what feels normal inside that environment.
The new Luddites
The video begins with student clubs at Temple University and other campuses. They advertise through paper flyers, replace smartphones with flip phones, and sometimes meet outdoors using only natural light. Their question is not how to abolish every tool. It is how to recover enough distance to decide which technologies deserve a place in their lives.
Henderson reads these groups as evidence of a shift from technological optimism toward pessimism. New technology was commonly treated as a unit of progress. The new Luddites look at the environment built from those units and occasionally answer: I do not want this.
Plato’s dead text
The philosophical history starts with writing. In the Phaedrus, Socrates tells how the god Theuth presents writing to King Thamus as an invention that will improve memory and wisdom. Thamus replies that it will produce forgetfulness because people will rely on external marks rather than practiced memory. They will encounter many statements while possessing the appearance rather than the reality of wisdom.
Socrates compares a text to a painting. Both preserve an appearance of life but cannot answer questions. No matter how a reader objects, the page repeats itself. Dialogue remains alive because definitions can be tested and revised through another person.
This concern fits Socrates’ own practice. His legacy was primarily oral, and Plato’s works preserve philosophy as dialogue rather than treatise. Aristotle even refers to Plato’s unwritten teachings, suggesting that some claims were thought to require living instruction.
Walter Ong’s Orality and Literacy makes the larger point without rejecting writing. Writing transforms consciousness, reason, and memory. It stores information so effectively that people can stop carrying it internally. The civilization-building gain is immense, and the cost remains real.
The calculator repeats the pattern on a smaller scale. Arithmetic becomes cheap and reliable while unaided calculation weakens. Acknowledging the loss does not require smashing the calculator. It makes the exchange visible.
Technology as ecology
Neil Postman argues that technology changes an environment rather than merely adding an object to it. Once writing, calculators, phones, or feeds become ordinary, institutions and habits reorganize around their availability. The useful question is therefore not only what the tool does, but what becomes easy, prestigious, necessary, or obsolete after it arrives.
Takeaways
- Every technology has a cost side. Writing externalizes memory, calculators externalize arithmetic, social platforms externalize social comparison, and productivity tooling externalizes self-measurement. The gain can still be worth it, but pretending there is no exchange makes the technology harder to understand.
- A technology is an environment change. Neil Postman’s ecological framing is useful because a new tool changes the surrounding conditions: habits, institutions, attention patterns, status games, and what kinds of behavior become easy.
- The original Luddites make more sense as labor and dignity protesters than as people who hated machines in the abstract. The target was an economic arrangement where skilled workers were made replaceable by owners, factories, and automated production.
- Heidegger’s “enframing” is a good warning word. The danger is learning to see the world as standing reserve: material waiting to be extracted, optimized, and made useful.
- The sharper modern twist is self-enframing. Phones, feeds, dashboards, wearables, and productivity systems make it easy to treat attention, mood, sleep, output, learning, and social life as extractable resources.
- Metrics compress rich values into portable scores. That makes institutions easier to run, but it also invites value capture: the simplified measure starts replacing the thing it was meant to point at.
- Tech pessimism now seems tied to a failed promise. People were sold the future as a clean upward line, then got addictive feeds, fragile attention, synthetic status games, brittle institutions, and a vague sense of being harvested.

- Plato’s worry about writing in the Phaedrus is less silly if writing is treated as a memory technology. Socrates thinks writing gives people the appearance of wisdom while weakening living dialogue and practiced memory. I do not want to give up writing, obviously, but the pattern is familiar: the tool solves one problem and creates another problem at the level of habit.
- Walter Ong’s point in Orality and Literacy sits on the same line: writing transformed consciousness. This is the useful level of analysis. The question is not only “what can this tool do?” but “what kind of person does this tool make easier to become?”
- The Luddite history matters because the insult version of “Luddite” hides the political economy. The new machines did not arrive as neutral progress for everyone. They arrived inside factories, ownership structures, child labor, deskilling, and worker disposability.
- Brian Merchant’s history gives this abstraction bodies. In some Cromford factories, roughly two-thirds of two thousand workers were children, some as young as six. Recruiters promised orphans food, housing, training, and even horse riding, then transported them in cages toward conditions nearby townspeople already recognized as terrible.
- Ned Ludd was probably a mythic figure. The story describes an apprentice ordered to be whipped for laziness who responds by smashing a knitting frame and fleeing to Sherwood Forest. Later machine breakers signed letters “General Ludd,” turning one possibly invented act into a collective identity.
- Machine breaking, factory fires, and threatening letters were political violence, not quaint consumer preference. The workers opposed an ownership arrangement in which automation enriched factory owners while turning skilled laborers and children into replaceable components.
- Heidegger’s Rhine example is a clean mental image: once a power plant enters the frame, the river becomes energy infrastructure. The river is still there, but the dominant relation has changed.
- “Human fracking” from Friends of Attention is ugly, but the phrase works. It names the extraction of interior life: attention, desire, restlessness, curiosity, insecurity, boredom.
- D. Graham Burnett’s attention history adds a useful caveat to normal attention-span talk. A lot of modern attention research came through military and industrial questions: vigilance, detection, stimulus response, measurable task persistence. That is a narrow slice of attention, not the whole human capacity.
- C. Thi Nguyen’s value capture model connects directly to product design. A metric begins as a proxy, becomes an objective, then starts reshaping practice around itself. Grades, IQ, credit scores, rankings, likes, streaks, steps, followers, and productivity counters all have this temptation.
- The practical question is not whether technology is good or bad in the abstract. It is: what does this system make cheap, automatic, prestigious, measurable, and profitable?
- This belongs near dopamine and product usage and perception, attention, and memory in interface design. The mechanism is wider than addiction or attention loss, though. It is about the whole environment of incentives around a person.
Human fracking and the history of attention
The phrase “human fracking” names the modern extraction of interior resources: attention, curiosity, insecurity, boredom, mood, and desire. It is an extension of Heidegger’s standing reserve from rivers and forests to the self.
D. Graham Burnett’s history complicates ordinary claims about shrinking attention spans. Much twentieth-century attention research grew from military and industrial needs: detecting a signal, maintaining vigilance, and measuring response under controlled tasks. These are real capacities, but they are not the whole of contemplation, care, absorption, or curiosity. A system can declare attention damaged after first defining attention as measurable task performance.
C. Thi Nguyen’s value-capture model explains the institutional step. A score begins as a simplified proxy for something difficult: education, trustworthiness, influence, health, or friendship. The clarity of the score makes it easier to optimize than the original value. Grades, credit scores, rankings, likes, streaks, steps, and productivity counters then reorganize conduct around what they can register.
The future that failed to arrive
The turn toward pessimism is partly disappointment. Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles opens with “Rocket Summer,” where a launch melts an Ohio winter and briefly brings warmth, open windows, and possibility. Later editions keep moving the story’s date forward because the inhabited Mars it imagined never arrived.
Fahrenheit 451, published only a few years later, presents the other branch. Books disappear, authoritarianism grows, and people retreat into constant entertainment delivered through “seashell ear-thimbles” resembling wireless earbuds. Bradbury did not predict the future so much as dramatize two contemporary relations to technology: exploration that expands human possibility and entertainment that shrinks social life.
The actual future contains eradicated smallpox, refrigeration, global communication, and other gains easy to forget because they have become infrastructure. It also contains products designed to monetize every remaining interval of attention. AI repeats the disappointment: instead of automating spreadsheet work to free people for art, companies automate art while people retain the spreadsheet work.
The radical rejection
Paul Kingsnorth’s Against the Machine supplies the video’s strongest opposing position and its main critical detour. Kingsnorth describes “the Machine” as modernity, uprooting, expansion, reason, money, and the Faustian drive toward endless control. Henderson finds the concept too unstable to evaluate because it accumulates implications without settling into a definition.
The book calls for a more mythic and spiritual relation to the world and gestures toward AI as a possible opening for supernatural forces. It offers a moderate path of boundaries and a radical path of reaction, including a casual reference to bombing data centers.
Henderson tests the proposal through a friend with a congenital heart condition. The friend’s survival depends on devices, hospitals, factories, research institutions, and logistical networks that the broad concept of the Machine appears to condemn. Returning to an earlier world would not merely restore lost community; it would kill people whose lives depend on modern infrastructure.
This is not presented as a cheap exception. Any proposal for humanity must count the people who bear its cost. A critique that treats technology as one undifferentiated spiritual force cannot distinguish an addictive feed from a cardiac device.
A neo-Luddite test
Chellis Glendinning’s 1990 “Notes Towards a Neo-Luddite Manifesto” provides the more usable ending. Technology is intrinsic to human creativity and culture. Glasses are technology; a politics that abolishes the infrastructure needed to produce them is not attractive. Neo-Luddites oppose technologies destructive to lives and communities, not technique itself.
Technology is also political. It emerges inside institutions and tends to perpetuate their interests. Choosing a tool therefore participates in choosing a world.
Henderson ends with four questions:
- Does this technology expand or contract human freedom?
- Does it contribute to human flourishing?
- Does it help me pursue projects and live according to my values?
- Is it primarily a way for someone else to gain money or power from my attention?
A useful technology can still carry a cost. The judgment is whether the exchange supports family, community, other creatures, interior stability, and the ability to think. The first act of resistance is not rejection. It is refusing thoughtless adoption.
