Winamp, Windows XP, and authored software
The comparison begins with a concession to modern software. Windows XP was unstable by current standards. Users could remove protection from system folders and delete files that the operating system needed. Drivers broke after updates. Internet Explorer lacked tabs, so browsing meant keeping separate windows open. Windows Media Player lacked a proper media library. Work and data sat inside a system that could fail in ordinary use.
That weakness created room for small teams. The video credits the first version of Winamp to Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev, who released it in 1997. The program brought together features that users wanted from a music player: drag-and-drop playlists, an equalizer, visualisations, and a modular architecture. Frankel also designed the interface himself. Winamp was free and carried a modest $10 donation button, yet the video says that thousands of users paid because it was, by a wide margin, the best way to listen to music on a PC.
The details around those features carried as much weight as the features themselves. Winamp had a memorable llama jingle at launch. Frankel called his company Nullsoft, an ironic jab at Microsoft. The interface used bright colours and controls that looked like physical buttons. None of this was required for playback. The program took shape around its maker’s own preferences, including the things he found cool and fun.
Design Lovers treats that authorship as the source of Winamp’s staying power. The player may look dated, yet its decisions remain recognisable. The interface gives the user a sense of a person having made it. The video sets that against the modern rule that the best interface is the one that disappears from attention. Character and functionality have become separate categories in the current design culture. The mid-1990s designers in the story saw them as compatible.
Windows XP supplies the larger example. It replaced Windows 98 and improved usability and technical performance whilst becoming more visually distinctive. Its colours, shapes, and elements still identify it at a distance. The video argues that technologies become familiar and invisible as they mature, whilst character can survive several generations. Winamp and XP have disappeared from daily use, yet people still build simulators and emulators that restore their external appearance. The claim is about memory as much as interface quality. Software with a strong author remains available to remember.
Clippy and the personality of assistance
The same impulse reached Microsoft’s most corporate software. Microsoft Word could have treated assistance as a serious, quiet function. Instead it produced Clippy, a paperclip with eyes and an intrusive personality. The designers gave a boring document a small attempt at companionship.
Clippy failed as a tool. The video credits it with another kind of success: people remember it. That distinction carries the argument from visual styling into behaviour. An assistant can be useful whilst remaining forgettable, or it can give the work a character that users may find irritating and still recognise years later.
The comparison then moves to current voice assistants and artificial-intelligence interfaces. These systems are far more capable than Clippy. Their protocol requires neutral support, which gives them a bland character of its own. Large language model chats are simple to learn and predictable to use. ChatGPT, the video asks, may become a visual backdrop in histories of a technological breakthrough, remembered in the way Clippy appears in histories of office software.
That question also reaches the wider interface around AI. The technology is presented as a source of hope on the scale of earlier electrical inventions, yet that optimism rarely appears in the products people use every day. The interfaces surrounding it aim for invisibility. They carry the task through a common design language whilst leaving the excitement of the underlying technology outside the frame.
The business case for character
The video accepts a practical cost. Character can reduce broad audience reach, adoption, and loyalty, all of which connect to revenue. A strong point of view asks the user to accept a particular world. A neutral interface allows more people to enter without learning its author’s preferences.
That trade-off cannot explain the whole change. Microsoft was already a large corporation when it made the Luna design for Windows XP. AOL bought Winamp because it was a valuable asset. Duolingo is also a corporation, yet its owl and aggressive green colour give the service a recognisable personality. Corporate scale does not prevent character. The video therefore places the change in social priorities rather than technical necessity.
People still gather around distinctive personalities. Personal brands are often easier to promote than a safe, minimal corporate identity. The same possibility exists inside ChatGPT, Notion, and Apple Music. Money and technology do not force these products to become anonymous. The industry has chosen a common language because it considers simplicity, universality, and efficiency more useful than visible authorship.
Function, form, and a shared design religion
The shared language rests on a belief that function should lead form and that the best interface approaches the condition of no interface. Affordances become rules to apply everywhere. Designers remove whatever they call superfluous so that the result stays simple and universal.
The video describes this as a cultural belief system. Interfaces express ideas about who people are, how they should perceive a system, and what kind of behaviour counts as efficient. Identical elements built from identical design systems give those ideas a common surface. Apple Music, messaging apps, operating-system settings, and AI chats can therefore feel like instances of one worldview even when they belong to different companies.
The alternative appears in the older examples. Winamp’s real-looking buttons, XP’s coloured surfaces, Clippy’s paperclip body, and Duolingo’s obnoxious owl all make the software individual. They may fail to please every user. They still create an emotional relation that a completely neutral surface cannot create by accident.
A qualified case for the older software
The conclusion leaves the nostalgia in place and limits it. Most of the older technologies are inconvenient to use now. The point is not that old software was good and current software is bad. The examples show that design carries a view of the world alongside its practical function.
The video ends by asking why minimalism and functionalism became common ground and whether Apple deserves the blame. It gestures towards the history of standardised shipping containers as a related case, then returns to the interfaces themselves. The available path includes efficient, predictable software. Another path could retain those gains whilst giving products a visible point of view. The choice remains cultural.
