A digital musical instrument is an epistemic tool because it stores a designed account of musical knowledge, possible actions and aesthetic rules. Musicians think and act through that account even when the interface hides where it came from.
Evidence and method
Magnusson develops a philosophical account from phenomenology, embodied cognition, the extended mind, material knowledge and examples from digital instrument design. The paper contrasts acoustic instruments with symbolic computer systems to expose what software formalises and conceals.
Digital instruments can contain automation, indirect mappings and rule-based spaces that act at the level of musical language (pp. 168–169). Familiar tools carry scripts: a keyboard makes one pitch system easy, a drum sequencer makes certain metres and subdivisions appear natural and a DAW makes copying and looping ordinary (p. 171).
Black-boxed instruments contain their makers’ knowledge. Designers understand the concepts encoded in the system, while users can gain operational skill without knowing its internal logic (p. 171). Software classifications formalise musical patterns and values, and a polished interface can hide their limits (p. 173).
Magnusson describes the digital instrumentalist as a luthier because mappings and parameters remain designed and mutable (p. 174). The designer decides what the interface reveals, what it hides and which actions it permits, and therefore bears aesthetic and cultural responsibility (pp. 174–175).

Limits
Magnusson states that the acoustic-digital contrast is a deliberate generalisation, and many digital practices remain embodied while acoustic instruments also contain theory. The paper focuses on research instruments rather than mass-market apps. It offers a conceptual argument rather than empirical evidence about Endel, creative labour or listening outcomes.

Labels such as “Focus,” “Sleep,” and “Relax” encode theories of how those states should sound. The simple interface hides decisions about timbre, density, repetition and transition rate, as well as how much surprise or sensor data the system permits.
A sensor-responsive app first converts the body into variables that a symbolic system can process. The body may change the sound without making an intentional musical gesture, which shifts musicianship towards designing and testing the rules that turn measured context into sound.
