Digital Musicianship
Digital musicianship is the ability to make, interpret, revise and account for music through digital systems. Listening, timing, arrangement, performance and sound design remain part of it, while rules, mappings, interfaces, data, software and circulation systems add other forms of work. A useful account identifies which decisions each person and technical part makes possible, carries out, hides or prevents.
From musical events to musical conditions
A musician can write the conditions that produce events instead of placing each one on a timeline. Code may define how events occur, a dataset may control musical parameters and an algorithm may act as a score that software performs (Magnusson, 2011). The composed material then includes available sounds, permitted relations, mappings, ranges, transitions, constraints and stopping rules.
Magnusson describes digital instruments as epistemic tools because their structures contain ideas about music and make some actions easier to conceive and perform than others (Magnusson, 2009). Schnell and Battier’s composed instrument joins instrument, score, procedure and composition in one system (Schnell & Battier, 2002). In both accounts, an algorithmic score belongs to the work of musicianship.
Specifying a space of possible events moves part of composition from the audible sequence into the design of the system that produces it.
Interfaces and affordances
Every digital music system proposes a set of actions through its interface. A piano roll presents notes as objects on a grid, while a modular environment centres signal routing and a generative app may replace tracks and transport controls with functions such as focus, sleep or relaxation. Labels, defaults, visual models, feedback and limits shape what a musician or listener can understand and do.
Affordances describe possible relations whose effects depend on the people and systems involved (Bucher & Helmond, 2018). The same control can support different practices for an experienced producer, a casual listener or a platform operator. Users also act on imagined affordances: beliefs about what an opaque system or ranking process rewards can change practice even when those beliefs are incomplete.
Digital musicianship includes learning an interface’s controls and reasoning about the choices it hides. Technical fluency alone leaves the system’s assumptions intact.
Modular curation
Many digital practices begin with existing modules such as samples, presets, loops, stems, models, tags, prompts or generated variations. The musician may choose the source set, define how modules combine, establish continuity, reject unsuitable results and revise the system after listening.
The creative weight of selection depends on what it changes. Choosing one preset from a menu carries less control than building the menu, setting its relations, deciding what counts as a valid result or training a model whose representation defines the available material. The musician’s contribution must be described where it occurs.
In adaptive generative music, a system may produce the local sequence during playback after a musician has shaped the assets, rules, invariants and limits that govern it. The audible output can therefore have several authors and several times of composition.
Platform anticipation
Digital musicianship extends into platforms that classify, circulate, measure and value music. Platformisation describes changes in infrastructure, markets, governance and cultural practice (Poell et al., 2019). Through these systems, platform operators shape which musical fragments become visible, which metadata matters, what users can compare and which numbers other industry actors treat as evidence.
Morris separates sonic, metadata and infrastructural forms of cultural optimisation (Morris, 2020). Musicians may change a track, choose a clip, write a caption, prepare several edits, stage a camera, test unreleased material or maintain a continuous content routine. Current creator research gives stronger support to these changes in post-production and promotional labour than to a general claim that platforms determine musical form (Polak & Schaap, 2025).
Creation, platform mediation, reception, metrics, promotion and later production can form a recursive process (Raffa & Pronzato, 2025). Anticipating circulation becomes part of musicianship when a musician decides how a work will become legible, reusable and measurable on a platform. Generative functional-music apps place that logic inside an ongoing musical system.
AI delegation and selection
AI systems can produce local events while people retain other decisions. A musician may choose a corpus, representation, prompt, model, path, constraint or output before editing or rejecting what the system produces. The model changes the result through its dependence on prior recordings, labels, technical objectives, interfaces, operators, listeners and later reuse.
Born’s account of musical mediation places creativity across sonic, technical, social, visual, discursive and temporal relations (Born, 2005). Distributed musical authorship describes this division of agency while keeping control visible: an account still has to identify who made each consequential choice.
AI increases the scale and speed of variation. Judgment, musical value and genre formation still depend on how musicians and listeners select, interpret, repeat, name, circulate and contest the result. A coherent or surprising event does not by itself establish a shared practice.
Skill and labour redistribution
Digital systems redistribute skill. Automation reduces some manual or procedural work while adding work in system design, data preparation, mapping, parameter choice, prompt construction, critical listening, comparison, testing, documentation, editing, rights clearance and platform maintenance.
This redistribution can produce new technique and conceal labour at the same time. A simple interface may hide performers in a training corpus, sound designers who prepared assets, engineers who built the model, moderators and annotators who maintained data and musicians who produce promotional material around the output. Ease for one user can depend on work and loss of control elsewhere.
Unequal control
Distributed agency leaves power unequal. Musicians may control sounds, rules, prompts, edits and final acceptance, while listeners control context, attention and feedback. Software sets the permitted operations. Platform firms can control the model, training data, interface categories, access, subscription terms, metrics, recommendation and records of user behaviour.
These layers can change without the musician’s consent or knowledge. A platform can remove a mode, alter a ranking rule, rename a category, change payment terms or stop access to the system in which a work exists. When the work depends on runtime software, ownership and maintenance become musical conditions. Endel makes this relation concrete because the sounding result depends on a continuing app, interface, engine and service.
What changes
- The musical work can extend beyond a fixed recording to include rules, assets, data, software state, interfaces and runtime behaviour. Musicianship can include system design, mapping, curation, evaluation and circulation alongside performance and production.
- Authorship can spread across people, technical parts, institutions and moments.
- Platform anticipation adds metadata, editing, testing, audience work and metric interpretation to musical labour.
- AI can move event-level decisions into a model, increasing the importance of selection, constraint and critical listening.
- Private infrastructure can gain direct control over musical possibilities, access and value.
What does not change
- Tools carry musical and social histories through inherited sounds, categories, practices and labour. Their affordances leave room for musicians to negotiate, resist, misuse and repurpose them.
- Automation relocates choices and may make them harder to inspect.
- More output does not establish more creativity, and technical novelty does not establish cultural value.
- A generated event becomes a genre or shared practice only when people make its differences consequential over time.
- Responsibility remains when agency spreads through a system. A critical account must ask who chose the inputs, rules, goals, categories and acceptable results, and who had the power to change them.
