The truth about Frank Lloyd Wright’s utopia

Broadacre City was supposed to be the future of the American city. Frank Lloyd Wright imagined a four-mile-square plan that could appear anywhere in the country, spread people and resources across individual plots, and turn the country into a new Usonia. Its language promises organic architecture, freedom, democracy, and peace. Its roads, isolated houses, class divisions, and dependence on the car point towards a very different future.
Phil Edwards has visited Wright’s houses and offices, and he approaches Broadacre as a personal obsession that has resisted a literal explanation. Stewart Hicks, an architect and architecture professor, helps him read the plan. Their shared conclusion develops as the tour proceeds: Broadacre is a remarkable design object, a poor practical plan, and a way to ask what utopias are doing when people draw them.
A four-mile square city
Broadacre City distributes the parts of a city across a large open territory. A county seat stands as a skyscraper in the middle of what looks like countryside. One-acre plots and scattered resources replace the dense urban centre. The plan carries explicit values, including decentralisation and a suspicion of tall buildings, yet its character becomes clearer in the model than in its slogans. The city resembles a rural landscape with an administrative tower more than a city or a suburb in the familiar sense.
The model also unsettles the democratic language. Individual plots suggest that everyone receives a share of land, while the plan gives different groups different kinds of homes. It includes workers’ dwellings, apartments, and houses above factories. The House on the Mesa offers a mansion for the very wealthy, complete with a covered pool. The elites occupy higher ground in the model, which turns social privilege into a physical relation between people and land. Broadacre distributes acreage whilst retaining a hierarchy.
The plan becomes more persuasive when it turns from the whole city to individual buildings. Wright’s later book The Living City contains drawings of the spaces that would fill Broadacre: a living room, a roadside market beside protected trees, and a school that Edwards finds far more convincing than the city around it. The market combines food production with shopping, a restaurant, and a beauty parlour. Wright designs the furniture, the rooms, and the city in one continuous act. Hicks describes this as a kind of vertical integration for an architect, since the same imagination controls every scale.
The larger plan cannot sustain the coherence of these smaller designs. Its major roads sit awkwardly at the edge, whilst the small city acquires an aquarium, a zoo, an arboretum, baseball stadiums, and monumental pyramids. The accumulation makes Broadacre feel like a catalogue of possibilities rather than an urban system. Wright can draw an excellent school or market because those buildings have a human scale. The city becomes strange when every idea is allowed to occupy the same map.
Cars and the future
Edwards turns to Le Corbusier’s The City of Tomorrow to place Broadacre among the utopias of the 1920s and 1930s. Le Corbusier charts the growth of mechanical transport and car production as forces that have already changed the city. Norman Bel Geddes proposes elevated roads in Magic Motorways. The Futurama exhibition sends traffic through buildings. These projects use imaginary cities to work through a technology that has arrived before its social consequences have been settled.
Wright gives the automobile a central place in that problem. Broadacre spreads buildings apart so that car travel becomes part of ordinary life, although Wright also describes the city as threatened by the forces that made it: electricity, automobiles, wireless communication, and modern transport. He imagines automatic overpasses that keep traffic moving, a highway without interruptions, and a gas station that treats refuelling as part of the architectural experience. The video points to a gas station Wright built in Minnesota as an example of this attempt to make decentralisation concrete.
The plan promises a new freedom by controlling the conditions of car use. Wires disappear, light pollution is reduced, traffic problems vanish, and administration takes place through radio. From a present-day view, this looks like an overdeveloped exurb that multiplies the distances it claims to solve. Wright saw the same arrangement as a way to contain the damage caused by the modern city.
Hicks gives the technological argument a more generous reading. Architects who work with new technology have to imagine the buildings that will meet it decades into the future. Planning for the automobile can therefore be a form of responsibility, even when the resulting plan fails as a place to live. The empty space in Broadacre gives the car room before the city grows around it. The plan remains fanciful, yet its fancifulness records a real design problem.
The plan as portrait
Broadacre becomes more legible when it is treated as a professional instrument. Hicks suggests that architects can create imaginary worlds as a way to market a studio and a worldview, even when they have no intention of building the whole world. Edwards recognises that Wright developed the model during the Depression, when his practice needed attention, and connected it to the organic architecture for which he was already known. Taliesin, Wright’s school and studio, appears in the plan even though a school for architects is hardly necessary to a new city. Its presence makes the model part of Wright’s own institutional story.
The model also gave Wright a way to revive his ideas during the Second World War. He presented Broadacre as a response to bombing and proposed it as a possible basis for rebuilding London. The plan’s military claims belong to the same habit of treating every new crisis as a reason to return to the model. Broadacre changes with the moment because Wright keeps using it to keep his own ideas in circulation.
The personal reading goes deeper than publicity. Broadacre isolates its elements, places education near the centre of social life, and treats democracy as the expression of an independent, self-made person. Those values fit Wright’s picture of himself. Hicks notes that Wright’s ceilings were famously low and suggests that his buildings helped construct a world suited to his own body. The city then becomes a self-portrait in which the worker, the elite, the teacher, and the architect occupy different parts of one personality.
That portrait has a political edge. Edwards points to Wright’s sympathy with parts of American fascism and reads the elevation of elites and isolation of the masses as signs of an exclusionary order. The companion research note presents this as one possible interpretation alongside a more expressive account of Wright’s identity. Broadacre contains enough evidence for the question, whilst the video does not establish a complete political history of Wright. The tension matters because a plan that speaks about freedom can still imagine social distance as a condition of freedom.
What utopias are for
The source shifts from Broadacre as a city to utopia as a way of thinking. A utopia can respond to a social change that has arrived too quickly to understand. It can advertise an architect’s practice. It can give a person a picture of the world that would fit his own values and body. It can also provide a space where contradictory hopes remain visible together: common land beside private wealth, education beside hierarchy, and freedom beside isolation.
Wright’s own view keeps the plan open. When asked about his most satisfactory achievement, he names the next building he will make. His answer places value in continued invention rather than in the completion of a final city. Edwards reaches a similar position through Broadacre. Utopias matter as vessels for discovery because a person may need to imagine a possible self before understanding what that self could be. The plan earns its place through the questions it exposes, even when its city would be difficult to inhabit.
Limits
This note follows the video, its English captions, and Phil Edwards’s companion source note. The captions misrender proper names and contain repeated transcription errors, so I have restored names where the surrounding account makes them clear. The video combines Wright’s writing from several periods and versions of Broadacre City rather than tracing each change in the project.
The video and companion note attach the claims about class, Wright’s politics, the Depression, the Second World War, and the automobile to their own interpretation. The description provides books, an archival television interview, the Sketchfab model used for the reconstruction, and several academic papers. Some of those papers are available only as JSTOR or journal records here, so the references preserve the source trail without treating every claim as independently verified.
