The Bauhaus Design Process

Roberts Architecture presents the Bauhaus as a fourteen-year school that changed the way art, architecture, and industrial design were taught. The account begins with a school founded in Weimar between the world wars and ends with a design method that appears in typefaces, diagrams, furniture, consumer products, and corporate images. Its central movement runs from the child at play to the machine-made object, then from avant-garde experiment to the corporate style that uses the same visual language to sell power and products.
From Weimar to the American classroom
The Bauhaus opened in Weimar under Walter Gropius. Its basic course, led first by Johannes Itten, taught materials, colour, and form through exercises that gave students a way to think about design before they learnt the academic routines of drawing and painting. Theo van Doesburg brought De Stijl’s geometric abstraction and functionalism to the school through a series of lectures. Gropius later pushed him out, changed the school’s motto to “art into industry”, and appointed László Moholy-Nagy to teach constructivism. Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Josef Albers, and other artists joined the teaching staff.
The school moved from Weimar to Dessau after it lost the support of the local government. The Nazis forced it from Dessau to Berlin, where it closed in 1933 after Adolf Hitler attacked it as degenerate art. The video treats the closure as a political break that also begins the Bauhaus’s American life. The Museum of Modern Art in New York held its first Bauhaus exhibition in 1938 under Gropius’s supervision. Art becomes a way to train the eye and the mind to recognise abstract relations before a designer applies them to a particular object or building.
The child as artist
The school grew from the idea that children can learn through play. Roberts places this idea against the class conditions of industrial Germany, where working-class children could enter factories at twelve whilst middle-class children continued into schools and universities. Kindergarten offered a model of structured play that the Bauhaus adapted for professional art education. Students returned to elementary forms and primitive exploration so that creativity could begin with direct contact with materials and space.
Friedrich Froebel’s blocks, also called Froebel’s gifts, supply the clearest example. The educational toys use simple geometric pieces to develop spatial reasoning. The source connects them to Frank Lloyd Wright, who said that the blocks taught him to understand geometry and spatial composition. Wright’s houses then become a demonstration of what this kind of play can produce in architecture. He breaks open the traditional box, pulls and pushes space, and lets one volume enter another. Gestalt and the whole
Gestalt psychology supplies the account of how those abstract relations become visible.
The video describes Gestalt perception as the tendency to organise separate elements into whole patterns. Its examples include shape identity, in which regular polygons are easier to recognise and remember; similarity, which groups repeated shapes or colours; proximity, which makes nearby elements seem related; continuity, which lets a line guide the eye through an interruption; closure, which lets the viewer complete an incomplete form; and figure-ground, which alternates between a solid figure and the space behind it. These laws turn perception into something a designer can study and arrange.
The result is a design practice that treats visual order as a material with rules. The source says that Bauhaus artists spent more than twenty years experimenting with perception, though it gives no research titles or names for that work. The examples support the larger point that diagrams, grids, type, and architectural plans can organise attention before they communicate any particular subject.
Function, material, and the machine
German functionalism emerges in the video as the rule that an object’s form should follow its intended use. Utility, simplicity, and efficiency take priority over ornament. The machine gives this programme its political hope. Roberts describes this faith as almost religious in its confidence that technology can save society.
The same break appears in the school’s treatment of history. Academic architecture had taught styles such as Gothic and Baroque as a chain of precedents. The Bauhaus argues that industrial materials and technologies have changed the conditions of building, so designers should make forms for the machine age and remove historical ornament. Design theory then spreads beyond architecture into furniture, textiles, typography, graphics, and industrial objects. A theory that once belonged to philosophers becomes a practical method for making a rug or a chair.
Avant-garde experiment and corporate style
The Bauhaus sits inside the wider political conflict of Weimar Germany. Roberts groups German Expressionism, film, photography, photocollage, gay nightclubs, and women’s emancipation movements around the school’s avant-garde culture. The Nazis suppress that culture and force many artists and architects into exile in the United States.
The migration changes the meaning of the work. The source says that avant-garde ideas, which had criticised conservative German middle-class values, were absorbed by American corporate culture and put to commercial use. Industrial design gives this change a formal institution. Philip Johnson’s 1934 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Machine Art presents industrial objects as art and helps establish industrial design as a field that art schools can teach.
Roberts then connects the Bauhaus method to present-day products. Apple products such as the mouse, personal computer, and iPhone appear as examples of a technology culture shaped by Bauhaus ideas. Grids, signs, and type
The grid begins as a basic ordering device. Paul Klee manipulates it until it becomes a net with its own structural rhythm. First-year art and architecture students learn similar exercises at schools such as Harvard. The grid also fits textile production, where weaving takes place on a loom. Anni Albers’s textiles show how a strict repeated structure can become a field for variation. Peter Eisenman carries the grid into architecture and uses it to disrupt the house’s ordinary function as a machine for living. The source reads this as a reversal within Bauhaus efficiency, since an ordering system can also make a building harder to use.
The video treats visual signs as translations from experience into graphic form. Drawing records motion as a line on paper. Diagrams, indexes, and graphs perform related acts. Herbert Bayer argues in 1925 that capital letters are unnecessary because speech does not need them. The video says that architects later adopted all-capital writing for blueprints because it was faster and more efficient. A small rule about lettering becomes part of the professional standards of architecture.
Diagrams and assemblies
Paul Rudolph’s analysis of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion shows how diagramming turns a building into a set of perceptual relations. The diagrams track the expansion and compression of space through wall planes, the routes a person takes, views across the rooms, sound reflected from the walls, diagonal lines that create spatial perception, centres and peripheries, and the way light enters. Roberts presents these drawings as an application of Gestalt theory to architecture. The building becomes legible through the relations that organise movement and attention.
The second method comes from Russian Constructivism: assembly through additive elements. A city can grow by adding one building to another. A sculpture can add one mass to the next. Rectangular boxes, coloured planes, graphic text, steel, concrete, and glass can all enter the same composition. The point is the visible construction of a form from distinct parts.
Mies’s Barcelona chairs supply a furniture example. Stainless-steel tubes sit against leather cushions, so the difference between the materials remains part of the design. Roberts follows this additive method into later work by pointing to Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67, Frank Gehry’s additive masses, and Zaha Hadid’s paintings and buildings. The source presents these as continuing forms of Constructivist composition, though the line between direct influence and formal resemblance is left unexamined.
The Bauhaus after the Bauhaus

Its Futura typeface, blue and red colour scheme, and red O refer to the company’s oil business whilst presenting the organisation as a clean modern system. Mies’s skyscrapers offer the architectural version of the same move. Their vertical scale expresses corporate power across the city skyline.
Roberts closes by calling for a reform of art and architectural education. That reform requires an account of the system’s origin, since the Bauhaus still shapes the schools, design methods, and professional habits through which modern work gets made. The video leaves the reform itself open. Its work is historical: it traces the route from play and perception to industrial production, then shows how an avant-garde method became a corporate image.
Limits
